Working at Port Sailing is a ton of fun for individuals who love being on the water! If you have a desire to enter the maritime industry, PSS can be your gateway to working on the sea. We seek people who are outgoing leaders with a desire to teach others and with the desire to learn more. (We do not just hire for experience, we are looking for strong employees.)

 

Positions are seasonal summer jobs with extended employment as a potential opportunity. Our season runs from April to October, but we run with a full staff for July and August, the height of our season. Heading into the off-season, there are additional opportunities for work. 

At Port Sailing you can earn sea time to work your way to getting your USCG Captains Masters Limited and Unlimited licenses. We offer tuition assistance for more maritime education advancement courses.

Position Details

Junior Sailing Program Instructor

Our Junior Sailing program is our largest program each summer. We see anywhere from 80-100 kids each year and have an annual staff of about eight. Our Junior Sailing instructors are typically a close group of high-school and college-aged individuals with strong sailing backgrounds. Most grew up sailing from a very young age, either in our program or one nearby. This role is unique as it includes aspects of being a camp counselor as well as an instructor. We have a range of programs for individuals of different ages and experience levels. This position is an incredible experience to introduce you to the workforce and gain additional experience on the water!

Requirements:

  • 16 y/o or older

  • 5+ years of sailing experience​

  • Availability from 9 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday, for the season

  • US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Cert (If you do not have one, PSS will be able to assist you)

  • CPR and First Aide Cert 

Expectations:

  • Able to teach children in a professional manner

  • Minor repair and maintenance work to small boats

  • Able to follow clear directions and follow through on them

  • Ensure the safety of all individuals on the water

Adult Sailing Program Instructor

Our Adult Sailing program is large and has a variety of programs. We teach American Sailing Association-accredited courses, private lessons, and refresher sails. Our Adult Sailing instructors are typically college-aged individuals who grew up sailing and have since gained additional experience onboard keelboats. Most of our courses are taught onboard Sonar23's, which are US One Design keelboats. 

 

Requirements:

  • 18 y/o or older

  • 6+ years of sailing experience, some of which onboard keelboats

  • Flexible schedule and can work weekends

  • ASA 101 Cert, but additional certifications are preferred 

  • CPR and First Aide Cert 

Expectations:

  • Able to teach adults in a professional manner

  • Give clear orders and break any potential age barrier in order to ensure everyone's safety

  • Minor repair, maintenance, and cleaning work

  • Able to follow clear directions and follow through on them

  • Ensure the safety of all individuals on the water

Launch Operator/Office Administrator

This is a dual position available to be one of our launch operators and office administrators. This role goes beyond greeting customers and answering phones. Individuals are responsible for operating our fleet of launch boats to transport classes and renters out to the boats. Furthermore, this individual is responsible for educating customers on how to properly operate the fleet of rentals and ensuring their safety. Launch operators/office administrators must be over 17 years old and either hold a USCG 6-Pack license or we will assist you in obtaining one. 

 

Requirements:

  • 17 y/o or older

  • USCG 6-pack license or equivalent (If you do not have one, PSS will be able to assist you)

  • Experience operating power boats

  • Sailing experience preferred

  • Flexible schedule and can work weekends

  • CPR and First Aide Cert 

Expectations:

  • Great customers in a friendly manner and assist them with any questions they may have

  • Give clear orders and break any potential age barrier in order to ensure everyone's safety

  • Minor tidying of the office and launch boats

  • Able to follow clear directions and follow through on them

  • Ensure the safety of all individuals on the water

Maintenance Coordinator

This position is the most complicated offering from PSS. Individuals must be proficient in diesel engine work, outboard engine maintenance, general boat repair, and quick problem-solving. This position requires an extremely "handy" individual with a strong background on the water. As you may know, things always break down on the water and we are seeking someone who can quickly and effectively work to find and address the problem. This individual will directly report to the owner and manager and work in cohesion with other employees.   

Requirements:

  • 18 y/o or older

  • Experience operating and maintaining power boats

  • Sailing experience is mandatory

Expectations:

  • Work quickly and effectively to find and address problems

  • Able to work in a timely manner

  • Able to follow clear directions and follow through on them

  • Ensure the safety of yourself and other indivuals
